Specialty Contact Lenses

Is your vision not what you want it to be even with glasses or common soft contact lenses? There can be multiple reasons for this. One thing that we look carefully at during your eye exam is the cornea. The cornea is the front clear surface of your eye that is very important for great vision. Lots of things can affect the cornea including injury, infection, complications secondary to refractive surgery, severe dry eye and corneal degenerations such as Keratoconus. If any of these apply to you, even the very best glasses or common soft contact lenses may not give you perfect vision.

Specialty Contact Lenses can help solve these issues. These types of contact lenses essentially create a new front surface of your eyes so that vision can be significantly more crisp and clear. We have a long established history of fitting these types of contact lenses at our clinic and the results can be literally lifechanging for patients we have seen in the past. The following is some information about how these lenses work and what the process looks like to be fit in these.

sclearl

Scleral Contact Lenses are the most commonly fit specialty lenses within our clinic. These lenses are rigid. They are filled with a liquid solution and placed onto the eye where the liquid bathes the cornea of the eye completely vaulting this tissues and settling onto the white part of your eye. This creates a new front surface of the eye allowing for significantly improved vision if the cornea irregular or damaged. This concept may sound strange, but please know that we will work with you patiently and thoroughly to help you have a great outcome. We are well experienced in fitting these lenses and teaching you how to take care of them. We can often achieve significantly improved vision and comfort.

Gas Permeable Contact lenses are similar in nature to scleral lenses but are smaller in diameter and rest directly on the cornea. They can be used for conditions such as Keratoconus and can also significantly improve vision. These lenses were more routinely fitted in the past before soft contact lenses were commonly used. Many patients continue to have great success with their GP lenses and we are comfortable fitting these.

OrthoK contact lenses are a rigid contact lens worn overnight that allows for improved vision throughout the day. These lenses are primarily used for Myopia control but can be used just to correct your vision. For more info please visit our Myopia Control page.

Custom Soft Contact Lenses can be helpful in a variety of situations. Common Soft contact lenses come in a variety of parameters that commonly work for most patients. However, common parameters don't fit every eye. We can fit you in Custom Soft Contact Lenses that are specifically built to your eye. Varieties of custom soft contact lenses can also be used for patients with Keratoconus and other corneal conditions.

Fitting of Specialty Contact Lenses...

Since these types of contact lenses are highly customizable and can be complicated, the fitting process can take more time and effort to get things just right. This is also reflected in the cost of the lenses and the fitting fee to get into these lenses. Your vision or medical insurance can often help cover these costs and our office can work with you to see what that looks like!
